책소개DESCRIPTION
Rodman (anthropology, York U., Canada) et al. present the stories of 25 women who were maids, or "house girls," in the Pacific islands of Vanuatu. Twenty-one indigenous and four expatriate women from different regions of Vanuatu tell their stories, including some who had attended a fieldworkers' training workshop in 2000 and 2001. The editors aim to show how unwritten histories can be documented, how indigenous women can write their own histories of gendered experiences in colonial contexts, and the collaborative roles anthropologists play. They focus on women who had been house-girls during the Anglo-French Condominium of the New Hebrides, before Vanuatu gained independence in 1980. The women, who come from various backgrounds, discuss their experiences, thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes about work, money, communication, perceptions of other women, and relationships. The book is aimed at anthropologists, historians, economists, and scholars of feminist studies. It is based on a workshop held in Port Vila, Vanuatu, in 2001, called the History of House-Girls Workshop, which brought together anthropologists and indigenous women to recount their experiences.
