Why bother with subject-verb agreement?

If you are in Bucharest and impatiently waiting for, say, your children to head off to school in the morning, you might hear yourself saying something like, “Haideţi caţi întârziat, ce mai!” Or: “Obviously, you are late!” Uttering that sentence might not actually spur anyone into action. But in the process, it might provide interesting evidence about the way everyday language works. MIT linguist Shigeru Miyagawa contends that it does just that, in a new book exploring the function of syntax, the principles through which language is constructed.

초보자에 주린이, 골린이… 인권위 “아동비하 표현”

주식 초보자를 ‘주린이’, 요리 초보자를 ‘요린이’라고 부르는 등 특정 분야에 갓 입문했거나 실력이 떨어지는 초보자를 어린이에 빗대는 것이 아동 비하 표현이라고 국가인권위원회가 3일 밝혔다. 인권위는 지난 4월 말 문화체육관광부 장관에게 앞으로 공공기관의 공문서 등에 초보자를 어린이에 비유하며 사용하는 ‘~린이’란 표현을 사용하지 않도록 홍보, 교육하는 방안을 만들라고 의견 표명을 했다. 방송통신심의위원회 위원장에게는 방송과 인터넷 등에서 이런 표현이 쓰이지 않도록 점검을 강화할 방안을 마련하라고 했다.
